Four Points Friday: Houston
Summer is here, inspiring travelers the world over to daydream about discovering new places. If you aren’t sure just where to go next, look no further. Here are four reasons to escape to Houston, Texas this season.
- Locals agree: Houston’s art scene is not to be missed. Established in 1923, the Miller Outdoor Theatre is the area’s premiere open air performance venue that hosts everything from concerts to family-friendly musical theater to the Houston Ballet. Events take place every weekend during the summer, and you can join knowledgeable Houstonians in picking up free tickets from the box office on the day of the performance. For sold-out shows, bring a picnic and catch the show from the hillside overlooking the theater.
- Kick back like a Houstonian at Blue Field Market’s Summer Saturday Nights. The event takes place every Saturday from 6-10pm through September 1st, and brings together the area’s best food trucks, vendors, and entertainers to create one of the coolest outdoor festivals in Houston. Relax with a free yoga session and then enjoy a locally crafted beer while competing in a yard game competition or just put your feet up and enjoy vibe.
- Catch the reigning World Series champs, the Houston Astros, play on their home turf at Minute Maid Park. If the team is in town, grab tickets to a game and experience America’s favorite pastime up close. Visiting during the off-season or while the team is traveling? No worries, you can still visit! Daily tours are offered to give guests a behind the scenes look at the park’s fascinating history and innerworkings.
- Houston’s Museum District is a stunning escape, it’s oak-lined streets between the 20 different museums are especially scenic for walking or biking. Admire the avant-garde architecture of the Renzo Piano-designed Menil Collection, the Neoclassical style of the Museum of Fine Arts, and Yoshio Taniguchi’s award-winning design for the Asia Society Texas Center. While half of the museums are always free to the public, many of the others are free on Thursdays.
